Bokkens are generally used for Kendo grading examinations start from 3rd Kyu.

“Shirakashi” Japanese White Oak is an evergreen broadleaf tree from the Fagaceae family. Similar but different to American White Oak being an evergreen tree it does not have a conspicuous open grain like there distant relative which produces soft areas in their wood, which are prone to impact damage making it more resilient and dent resistance.

Japanese White Oak has denser grains making it stronger, less likely to break and slightly heavier than their cousin Japanese Red Oak. The quality was so reliable that it was once officially adopted by the National Police Agency of Japan for their Police Batons.
